Asian University for Women

The Asian University for Women (AUW) is an independent, international university based in Bangladesh. AUW is dedicated to excellence in women’s education and leadership development through a technical and humanistic liberal arts and sciences curriculum. It was conceived in 2000 following the publication of “Higher Education in Developing Countries: Peril and Promise” by The World Bank/UN Task Force on Higher Education and Society, and it was later established through the Asian University for Women Act, 2006 when the Parliament of Bangladesh ratified the Charter of the Asian University for Women. AUW’s mission is to graduate women who will be skilled and innovative professionals, service-oriented leaders in the communities they serve, and promoters of intercultural understanding and sustainable human and economic development in Asia and worldwide. The university is dedicated to teaching excellence in a liberal arts setting, strongly committed to research and scholarly engagement. AUW currently has over 1700 students from 17 countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Sri Lanka, Timor Leste, Syria and Vietnam), who are mostly first generation learners from diverse socio-economic background. About the Position

The Asian University for Women (AUW) invites applications from outstanding faculty from Bangladesh to join AUW for a faculty position in Mathematics, Statistics, or Data Sciences in the Fall 2024 or Spring 2025 Trimester. The mission is to educate and empower students to acquire a strong foundation for further undergraduate or graduate programs in computer science, natural sciences, and social sciences, and to develop and deliver academically rigorous academic programs in Mathematics, Statistics, and Data Sciences.

The successful candidate will deliver high-quality courses in Mathematics, Statistics, and/or Data Sciences, demonstrate teaching excellence, engage in research activities, and enrich the academic experience. Additionally, the position requires active participation in the academic programs and University through service and collaborative initiatives.

Expected to teach:

Probability & Statistics, Calculus, Multivariate Calculus, Numerical Analysis & Computing, Operations Research, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Scientific Computing, Differential Equations, Python and R, SQL, Data Mining, Predictive Modeling, Large Language Models, Machine Learning, Big Data, Dynamical Systems, Complex Network Science, Information Theory and more, depending upon the area of expertise.

Main Responsibilities of the Job:

  • Develop programs and the course curriculum
  • Deliver lectures, conduct tutorials, and quizzes, and prepare assignments on the assigned courses.
  • Teach 24 credits per academic year.
  • Serve as an academic advisor and mentor to students.
  • Supervise students in developing and implementing senior thesis projects including guiding them in data analysis, thesis writing, and presentation of findings
  • Attract research funding and engage in research
  • Provide leadership and service on academic committees and academic initiatives
  • Maintain office hours for students

Other Requirements:

  • PhD degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Sciences, or Computer Science from a recognized university
  • Publications in prestigious journals and subject-matter journals /conferences
  • Outstanding record of research accomplishments and a strong dedication to service, mentoring, graduate teaching, attracting external funding, and making an impact in multidisciplinary research
  • A strong understanding of inclusivity and diversity in the classroom and beyond
  • Candidates applying for the Assistant Professor position should demonstrate a strong aptitude for conducting high-impact research.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of the liberal arts model of education.
  • Experience or interest in working in Asia.
  • Experience or interest in teaching at women-only institutions.
  • Ability and willingness to teach students whose native language is not English
Expected engagement duration: 3 years, renewable
   

Compensation:                 According to AUW policy.
