AUW has committed to educate 600 new Afghan students and, working with partner organizations on the ground, led a recruitment drive campaigning across all 34 provinces in Afghanistan, receiving an overwhelming response of nearly 10,000 applications. Of the 600, 171 women have already arrived on campus, with the remaining students expected to arrive for the Fall semester starting in September 2022. These students will graduate from university with an undergraduate degree and will act as a brain bank ready to lead the Afghanistan of the future.
In order to raise scholarships for the incoming Afghan students, the AUW West Coast Advisory Board has organized a walkathon at the end of August. HERStory: Journey from Kabul, is a global, virtual event taking place between August 22 – 28, with a goal to raise US$500,000 for the AUW Afghan Scholarship Fund, which will be matched by the US State Department. We welcome corporate sponsors, Board members, students, friends, and mentors around the world to come together and walk, run, bike or swim a symbolic 3,000km – the distance from Kabul, Afghanistan to Chittagong, Bangladesh, where AUW is located.
