An extraordinary group of AUW Afghan students led and managed the perilous journey from Kabul city to the airport. Buses were pre-arranged to pick up the students from different locations. Through WhatsApp group messages, each contingent of students were alerted to quickly show up at the designated location to board their assigned bus. Each bus was staffed by an unarmed security person and a driver who were to negotiate at the checkpoints to secure clearance. The buses were stocked with water and food and battery banks. But, only the student leader in concert with her six-member leadership team, were empowered to make on the spot decisions.
