The Physical Education Department plays a pivotal role in fostering a culture of health, fitness, and competitive sports among students. Established with the vision of promoting physical well-being alongside academic excellence, the department provides comprehensive training programs, professional coaching, and structured opportunities for students to engage in a wide spectrum of sports and physical activities. By combining rigorous training with holistic development, the department empowers students to cultivate discipline, teamwork, strategic thinking, and leadership skills, ensuring they excel both on and off the field.
Student Sports and Physical Activities
AUW strongly encourages students to participate in diverse physical activities as part of the Pathway and Undergraduate programs. The department offers carefully designed curricula and coaching sessions aimed at enhancing technical skills, physical conditioning, and tactical awareness. Students actively engage in both individual and team sports, developing confidence, resilience, and competitive spirit. Beyond formal training, students are encouraged to take part in friendly matches, workshops, and inter-university competitions which serve to enhance their sporting experience and personal growth.
Active Games and Training Opportunities
The department currently offers a wide range of sports and training programs under the guidance of qualified and experienced coaches:
Karate – The AUW Karate program provides comprehensive training in kumite, kata, and kihon, focusing on technical precision, discipline, and physical conditioning. Students develop self-defense skills, agility, strength, and tactical awareness, preparing them for both competitive and practical applications of martial arts. Both Pathway and Undergraduate students actively participate in the program, learning to combine traditional techniques with modern strategies for personal safety, confidence, and overall fitness. The training also emphasizes mental resilience, focus, and sportsmanship, equipping students to compete in local, national, and international competitions while applying self-defense principles in real-life situations.

Judo – The AUW Judo program emphasizes strength, balance, flexibility, and defensive techniques, helping students develop both physical fitness and strategic thinking. Undergraduate students receive hands-on training in throws, holds, and tactical maneuvers, learning to apply these skills in both competitive settings and real-life self-defense situations. The program also nurtures discipline, focus, and resilience, preparing students to participate confidently in local, national, and international competitions. Through regular practice sessions and guided coaching, students enhance their agility, coordination, and confidence, building a strong foundation in both the art and sport of judo.
Basketball – The AUW Basketball program focuses on teamwork, strategic gameplay, coordination, and skill development through regular practice sessions, drills, and inter-house matches. Undergraduate students actively participate, enhancing their technical skills, game awareness, and physical fitness. AUW girls have a remarkable track record in competitions, winning numerous accolades in inter-university and league tournaments, including championship titles and runner-up positions. The program not only nurtures competitive excellence but also promotes confidence, leadership, and sportsmanship, preparing students to excel in both local and national basketball arenas.

Volleyball – At AUW, Volleyball training combines fast-paced action, tactical awareness, and team synergy. Students learn advanced techniques such as serves, spikes, blocks, and digs, while also sharpening their ability to make quick decisions during high-intensity matches. Beyond physical skills, the program emphasizes communication, trust, and collaboration, which are critical both on and off the court. Regular inter-house competitions and practice matches provide students with opportunities to test their skill. 
Football – The AUW Football program offers students an opportunity to develop ball control, tactical awareness, physical endurance, and teamwork under the guidance of experienced coaches—including instructors who have worked with the Bangladesh Women’s National Football Team. Training sessions focus on technical skills, strategic gameplay, and match simulations, preparing students for both inter-house competitions and regional tournaments. Students also gain valuable insights into professional-level coaching, fitness regimes, and leadership on the field. The program encourages discipline, resilience, and competitive spirit, helping AUW athletes excel in local, national, and international arenas while fostering a lifelong passion for the game.

Table Tennis – At AUW, Table Tennis is more than just a game; it is a test of precision, agility, and mental sharpness. Students train under the guidance of experienced coaches during regular physical education classes, focusing on reflex development, footwork, spin control, and strategic shot placement for both singles and doubles play. Regular practice matches and inter-house competitions allow students to apply techniques, build competitive instincts, and refine their skills. The program fosters discipline, concentration, and sportsmanship while helping students improve coordination and enjoy the fast-paced nature of the sport.
Badminton – The AUW Badminton program offers students the opportunity to develop agility, precise footwork, racket control, and strategic thinking under the guidance of experienced coaches. Training sessions focus on technical shot-making, court movement, and tactical gameplay for both singles and doubles matches. Regular practice sessions and match simulations prepare students for inter-house competitions and tournaments, while also strengthening endurance, coordination, and reflexes. The program encourages discipline, focus, and sportsmanship, helping AUW students build confidence, maintain an active lifestyle, and develop a lifelong appreciation for the sport.
Taekwondo – The AUW Taekwondo program provides students with the opportunity to develop flexibility, strength, and discipline while learning fundamental martial arts techniques. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, training focuses on combat techniques, self-defense skills, balance, and physical fitness. Practice sessions also emphasize respect, focus, and perseverance, preparing students for demonstrations and competitive events while promoting confidence and personal development.
Boxing – The AUW Boxing program offers students structured training that combines physical conditioning, technical skill development, and controlled sparring sessions. Students learn proper punching techniques, footwork, defensive strategies, and endurance training under the supervision of experienced coaches. The program helps build strength, confidence, resilience, and mental focus while encouraging discipline and a strong commitment to fitness.
Events, Participation, and Highlights
The department organizes annual inter-house sports competitions, a flagship event where students showcase their talents across multiple disciplines. These competitions include karate (kumite, kata, and kihon), basketball, volleyball, football, table tennis, badminton (singles and doubles), and athletics events. Through these competitions, students not only demonstrate their athletic abilities but also develop important values such as teamwork, leadership, discipline, and sportsmanship. Participation in local, national, and international tournaments provides students with valuable opportunities to challenge themselves, strive for excellence, and bring recognition to AUW. Throughout the year, the department also organizes friendly matches, workshops, and skill-development sessions, ensuring that students have opportunities to learn, participate, and grow in their chosen sports.

Maria Chakraborty
Associate Director: Physical Education & Karate Coach
Ms. Maria Chakraborty has served as the Associate Director of Physical Education and Karate Coach at the Asian University for Women (AUW) since 2008. Ms. Chakraborty is the first woman in Bangladesh to achieve a 5th Dan Black Belt and the only woman in Bangladesh to complete the AKF Kata Judge Level A certification. She has earned numerous medals in her competitive career while serving as a JKA licensed judge and referee at international championships. At AUW, Ms. Chakraborty has trained students in karate, yoga, and self-defense, with many under her guidance attaining top positions in national and international tournaments. Ms. Chakraborty’s career exemplifies not only personal excellence but also a lasting commitment to empowering women and promoting martial arts as a tool for physical, mental, and social development.
Aysharza Biswas
Coordinator
Ms. Aysharza Biswas is a graduate of AUW, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Public Health. She currently serves as Coordinator of Physical Education at AUW, supporting the planning and implementation of sports, physical education, and wellness initiatives that promote student health and well-being. During her time at AUW, she served as President of the AUW Research Club and Secretary of the AUW Public Health Club, contributing to student leadership, research, and health awareness activities. She has also been involved in public health research projects focusing on non-communicable diseases, mental health, and health promotion.
Syed Salih Muhammad Sazzad Ullah
Badminton Coach
Mr. Syed Salih Muhammad Sazzad Ullah is an internationally certified badminton coach with over a decade of elite playing and coaching experience in Bangladesh and Malaysia. Mr. Sazzad became the Bangladesh Under-19 National Champion in Men’s Doubles in 2007 and went on to win gold and bronze medals at national singles and doubles games. Internationally, he represented Bangladesh at the Under-19 World Cup in Pune, India (2008). He has also been a coach at various academies in Chittagong and Kuala Lumpur. Mr. Sazzad has served as Badminton Instructor at AUW from 2016 to 2022, rejoining in 2025. Through his extensive playing and coaching experience, Mr. Sazzad is committed to developing disciplined and internationally competitive players while promoting the growth of badminton at both grassroots and high-performance levels.
Fazal Rabban Sweet
Basketball Coach
Although a businessman by profession, Mr. Fazal Rabban Sweet’s passion has always been sports and coaching. He has served as a coach at several institutions, including Summer Fields School, Faujdarhat Cadet College, Chittagong Grammar School, and the Chittagong District Team. He has represented the Bangladesh National Basketball Team and has also played basketball and football internationally in Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand on behalf of Chittagong Club Ltd. Currently, he serves as the Co-Convener of the Basketball and Swimming Pool Sub-Committee at Chittagong Club Ltd., receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award in Basketball during the club’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. Since 2012, he has been serving as Basketball Coach at AUW.
Noman Sufiyan
Table Tennis Coach
Mr. Noman Sufiyan was a member of the Bangladesh National Table Tennis Team during 1979-1980 and has built a prominent career as both a player and a coach. Mr. Sufiyan became the Men’s Singles Champion of the Chittagong District in 1981 and 1983 and won the Men’s Singles title at the 60th Anniversary USSR Table Tennis Competition in 1983. He was recognized as Best Player at the CJKP Table Tennis Championship (1982-83) and won Runner-up in Men’s Singles at the Dhaka Division Championship (1980-81). Beyond his competitive career, Mr. Sufiyan served as a coach for the Bangladesh Table Tennis Federation from 1985 to 1993 and is currently Chairman of the Table Tennis Committee at the Chittagong District Sports Association. At present, Mr. Sufiyan serves as Table Tennis Coach at AUW.
Sahidul Islam
Volleyball Coach
Mr. Sahidul Islam serves as Volleyball Coach at AUW. He represented the National University Volleyball Team in 2007, represented the Chittagong District Volleyball Team from 2005 to 2012, and later played for the Cox’s Bazar District Volleyball Team from 2014 to 2019. He achieved several notable accomplishments, including Runner-up at the Inter-University Volleyball Competition (2007) and Champion at the Inter-District Volleyball Competition (2009). He also won the Cox’s Bazar Premier Volleyball League Championship in 2014 and 2016 and finished as Runner-up in 2017. Mr. Islam has also been a member of several prominent clubs, including Nobarun Volleyball Club, Nobudoy Songo Club, and Azad Sporting Club. Through his coaching at AUW, Mr. Islam continues to guide and develop students in volleyball and promote competitive sports participation.
Mst Marufa Khatun
Karate and Judo Coach
Mst. Marufa Khatun is a passionate and accomplished martial artist from Bangladesh with extensive experience in judo, karate, wushu, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu. A Black Belt 1st Dan in judo and karate, she has earned multiple medals in national and international competitions––including gold medals at the Indobangla Judo Championship in India and the Bangladesh Games. Most recently, she earned a silver medal at the 2025 National Judo Championship. Since May 2025, she has been serving as Physical Instructor at Asian University for Women (AUW), where she trains and mentors students in physical fitness, martial arts, and overall athletic development. Through dedication, discipline, and strong leadership, she continues to inspire the next generation to achieve confidence, resilience, and excellence in both sports and life.
Anuching Mogini
Football Coach
Anuching Mogini is a distinguished former football player and a professional football coach with extensive experience in elite competition and athlete development. She represented the Bangladesh Women’s National Football Team as a forward from 2016 to 2022, winning the AFC U-14 Women’s Championship in Tajikistan (2016) and securing multiple championship titles at the Under-15 and Under-16 levels across Bangladesh, Bhutan, Hong Kong, and Myanmar. Her international experience also includes championship victories at the FIFA International Friendly Matches in 2022, while domestically she was integral to Bashundhara Kings’ championship-winning season in 2022–2023. Currently, Ms. Mogini serves as Football Coach at AUW, where she develops and implements structured training programs focused on technical excellence, tactical awareness, physical conditioning, and leadership development.
