Lab Officer (Chemistry and Environmental Sciences)

Position: Lab Officer (Chemistry and Environmental Sciences)
Unit: Laboratory
Reports to: Director, Environmental Sciences Program
Location: Chittagong, Bangladesh

Main Responsibilities of the Job:

The various duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Cleaning and maintaining all Chemistry/ Environmental Sciences laboratory equipment.
  • Assist Professors/Instructors in undergraduate laboratory preparation and cleanup, including the making of reagents and molar solutions, and collection, processing and distribution of chemical/ Environmental specimens.
  • Perform frequent stock takes and order laboratory supplies.
  • Other related duties as assigned by faculty.
  • Preparing reagents, solutions etc. and setting up equipment for students. Ensuring cleanliness and safety of the lab.
  • Assisting faculty/Instructors and students in conducting experiments. Assisting with the virtual lab platform during online operation period.
  • Maintenance of equipment for the laboratory, including calibration and record keeping.
  • Keeping records of chemicals, glassware, and other laboratory supplies and accessories.
  • Stock verification and ordering of laboratory supplies.
  • Primary operation and maintenance of the research laboratory instrument.
  • Assisting senior thesis and faculty research on relevant areas.
  • Assisting faculty and students in sample collection, preparation, testing and fieldwork.
  • To carry out any other duties from time to time that may reasonably be required by the line manager.

Competency Required:

  • Minimum of B.Sc degree in Chemistry/Environmental science or equivalent. (M.Sc Preferable)
  • Experience in working chemistry/Environmental Sciences/biology related equipment, chemicals and specimens.
  • Excellent English oral, reading and writing skills.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of laboratory terminology. Knowledge of chemical risks, hazards and safe handling.
  • Ability to instruct students about lab use and safety.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong computer skills particularly in the use of MS Word, Excel and Access.
  • Experience in and commitment to working in a multicultural environment.

NOTE:

Applicants may be required to pass a skills assessment test. Laboratory Officer should present a positive professional image and thus should dress accordingly. They are expected to be clean and well groomed. Laboratory Officer will adhere to the same dress restrictions as students. Open toed shoes will not be allowed.
